Belvoir Castle, Belton House, Woolsthorpe Manor (Isaac Newton's house), Nottingham Castle and Newstead Abbey (home of Lord Byron) are all within easy reach.  Nearby sporting facilities include the National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepoint, parachuting and go-karting at Langar aerodrome, and numerous local fishing sites.  The Vale of Belvoir provides easy walking in an attractive rural setting, with woodland routes and towpath walks along the Nottingham-Grantham canal. Cycling and horse riding are other popular local activities. There is a leisure centre in Bingham, approximately 6 miles away.

The area is well served by inns and restaurants, including the Anchor Inn in Plungar itself. There are village shops in Stathern and Harby (each approximately 2 miles away) and Bingham (see above) has a greater range of shops and also take-away restaurants. Bingham also has a weekly market and monthly Farmer's Market.
